Due to
the location on the windward side about 2,000 feet elevation, the park
can get a lot of rain, especially at night. They thought of that
by providing the shelters pictured to the left. Below the roof is a
concrete slab you can pitch your tent on - or just use sleeping bags if
you are brave.

At the
campgrounds is this pavilion equipped with picnic tables, grills, sink
and restrooms. My wife befriended this cute little dog on this
trip up there. Pets are difficult to impossible to bring to Hawaii
as there is a long quarantine period required for mainland pets, other
than assistance dogs. |

Also you
will pass some dense jungle like that to the right. The road is
very good albeit narrow, but not a problem as there is not much traffic.

On the
way up the mountain you will pass some beautiful pastures like the one
to the left. Mostly we have seen horses in the pastures. I guess
the cattle is mostly on the Parker Ranch a little west of here.
One
place on the way raised roosters with each one tethered to a macadamia
nut tree. These specimens would live to fight another day.
Another
sight that was somewhat a surprise the first time I saw one was the
Rainbow Eucalyptus trees, so named for the multi-colored bark they have.
